What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, size and strength. Once it's cemented in place, it covers the whole visible part of the tooth above the gum line. In the Philippines, a crown is commonly called a "jacket."
When Do You Need a Crown?
Types of Crowns at Mid Town Dental Clinic
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia is a strong ceramic (zirconium dioxide). It's less likely to chip or crack than porcelain-fused-to-metal, it's gentler on the opposite teeth when you chew, and it contains no metal. The trade-off is appearance: plain zirconia doesn't match natural tooth colour as easily, so it's often layered with porcelain on visible teeth. From AED 499 per tooth.
PFM (Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal) Crowns
A PFM crown has a metal base covered with tooth-coloured porcelain. It can be shade-matched to your other teeth and works on front or back teeth. Its drawbacks are that the porcelain can chip, it wears the opposite teeth more than metal does, and a thin dark line can show at the gum line, especially if your gums recede. From AED 299 per tooth.
E-max Crowns
E-max is a high-strength lithium disilicate glass-ceramic known for its exceptional translucency and natural appearance. It matches the shade and light-reflecting qualities of real teeth better than zirconia or PFM, making it ideal for front teeth, though it is slightly less fracture-resistant on heavy-chewing back molars. From AED 699 per tooth.

How Getting a Crown Works
Your dentist checks the tooth, often with an X-ray. If there's extensive decay or a risk of infection, root canal treatment may be needed first. The tooth and gum are numbed, the tooth is reshaped, and an impression or scan is taken. You leave with a temporary crown.
Once the lab has made your crown, usually in 2–3 weeks, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is checked for fit and shade, then cemented in place. [CONFIRM the clinic's lab turnaround, and whether same-day crowns are offered]
- Avoid sticky or chewy foods such as gum and caramel, which can pull it off.
- Chew mainly on the other side of your mouth.
- Avoid hard foods such as raw vegetables.
- When flossing, slide the floss out sideways instead of lifting it up.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
Dental crowns last 5 to 15 years on average. Zirconia crowns in a well-looked-after mouth can last 10 years or more. Habits that shorten a crown's life include grinding or clenching your teeth, chewing ice, biting your nails and opening packets with your teeth. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect your crown.
A crowned tooth can still decay at the edge where the crown meets the tooth. Brush twice a day, floss daily, especially along the gum line, and keep up regular check-ups and cleaning.
Common Crown Problems and What to Do
Sensitivity
it's common to feel some sensitivity once the numbness wears off. If it hurts when you bite, the crown may be sitting too high. Call us to have it adjusted.
A chipped crown
small chips can sometimes be repaired; larger chips may mean replacing the crown.
A loose crown
contact us. A loose crown can let bacteria in and cause decay underneath.
A crown that falls off
keep the crown, clean it and the tooth gently, and contact us as soon as possible. It may be possible to re-cement it. We offer same-day emergency appointments.
Crown Prices and Payment
Zirconia crowns start from AED 499 per tooth and PFM crowns from AED 299 per tooth. Your final price depends on the material and whether the tooth needs treatment first, such as a root canal. Some enhanced insurance plans include dental cover. Check your policy, or ask us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dental crowns last 5 to 15 years on average, and zirconia crowns in a well-looked-after mouth can last 10 years or more. Grinding your teeth, chewing ice and poor oral hygiene shorten a crown's life.
The tooth and surrounding gum are numbed with local anaesthetic before the tooth is shaped, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles.
"Jacket" is a common name in the Philippines for a dental crown: a cap that covers the whole tooth to protect and restore it.
Zirconia is stronger, less likely to chip and contains no metal, but it costs more. PFM costs less and can be shade-matched, but its porcelain can chip and a dark line may show at the gum line. Your dentist will recommend one based on the tooth's position and your bite.
Not always. A root canal is needed first when a tooth has extensive decay, an infection or a damaged nerve. Your dentist checks this with an X-ray at your first visit.
Keep the crown, clean it and the tooth gently, and contact us as soon as possible. The crown can often be re-cemented, or a new one made.
Yes. Mid Town Dental Clinic accepts Tabby and Tamara, so you can split the cost of your crown into smaller payments.
